Sun dried turkey berry, known in Tamil as sundakkai vathal. The berries are dried whole in the sun and lightly salted, the way they are prepared for a South Indian store cupboard. They keep their shape and firm bite and swell again once they hit hot oil or a simmering gravy.

How it is used

  • Fry a handful in oil until they puff and darken then serve alongside rice and curd
  • Add to vathal kuzhambu sambar or any tamarind gravy
  • Grind into a spice powder or podi
