Kolhapuri Chappals

About Kolhapuri Chappals

Kolhapuri chappals are open leather sandals named after Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India, where local artisans have made them by hand for generations. A classic Kolhapuri has a flat leather sole, a toe ring and a broad front strap, often finished with hand punching, braiding or stitched patterns. In 2019 Kolhapuri chappals received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for their home districts in Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Today the same craft comes in many forms: flat chappals for daily wear, block heels and wedges for festive outfits, and traditional men's designs that pair well with a kurta, a dhoti or jeans.

Popular Kolhapuri styles

  • Kapashi - one of the best known traditional Kolhapuri designs, made for men and women.
  • Shahu - a royal looking style with ornate stitching and decoration.
  • Veni - straps finished with braided leather.
  • Flats, heels and wedges - modern cuts for women that keep the Kolhapuri toe ring and strap.

Finding your size

Kolhapuri chappals are sized in Indian / UK sizes. Most of our Kolhapuri listings carry the brand's own size chart on the product page, so please check it before you order. If you are between two sizes, the larger size is usually the safer choice.

Caring for leather Kolhapuris

  • Handmade leather can feel firm at first and softens with wear.
  • Keep them away from water. If they get wet, let them dry in the shade, away from direct heat.
  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth and store them in a cool, dry place.
  • Each pair is handmade, so small differences in colour and stitching are normal.
