Surekha Gallery Modak Diya | Handcrafted Borosilicate Glass Oil Lamp
The Modak Diya is a handcrafted oil lamp made from borosilicate glass, shaped after the modak — the pleated sweet dumpling traditionally offered to Lord Ganesha. Its ribbed body narrows to a slender neck topped with a flared glass wick holder, and the clear glass lets the oil and flame show through for a warm, steady glow.
Key Features
- Handcrafted from heat-resistant borosilicate glass
- Ribbed modak form with a flared glass wick holder
- Clear body that shows the oil level and the glow of the flame
- Reusable and washable, unlike single-use clay diyas
- Compact tabletop size, approximately 6 x 6 cm
- Burns ghee, sesame oil or any regular lamp oil
Material & Care
- Made of borosilicate glass — the same heat-resistant glass used for laboratory and ovenware — so it withstands the warmth of a burning wick.
- Let the lamp cool completely, then wash with warm water and a mild detergent to remove oil residue, and dry before storing.
- Handle with care: this is a glass lamp. Keep it on a flat, stable surface away from the edge.
How to Use
- Fill the lamp with oil — ghee, sesame oil or any regular lamp oil.
- Set a cotton wick through the glass wick holder, leaving the tip above the oil.
- Let the wick soak briefly so it draws up oil, then light the tip.
- Place the lamp on a stable, heat-safe surface and never leave a lit flame unattended.
- Extinguish the flame after use and clean the lamp before storing.
